Bridgeport High Alumna McKenna Smith Recognized by Big 12 Conference for Academic Achievement

A total of 432 student-athletes have been named to the 2017-18 Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team, which honors conference competitors who are new, incoming freshmen at their respective league institution.
 
Bridgeport High School alumna McKenna Smith was one of four selections from the Mountaineer women's track program. She was joined by Marianne Abdalah, Ellie Gardner and Mikayla Shute. 
 
Smith finished with a perfect 4.0 grade point average.
 
Baylor led the way with 65 honorees, while Oklahoma followed with 52.
 
A total of 40 student-athletes were nominated with 4.00 grade point averages, including 10 from Oklahoma State.
 
Nominated by each institution’s director of student-athlete support services, student-athletes on the Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team must be new, ?rst-time/incoming freshmen that have completed 24 semester hours of non-remedial coursework and achieved a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00.
 
Additionally, the student-athlete must have participated in at least one of their team’s scheduled contests and must have been a member of their respective team for their sport’s entire NCAA Championship segment. The Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team was introduced in the 2012-13 academic year.
 
As noted earlier on Connect-Bridgeport, BHS alum and football player Elijah Drummond was recognized by the Big 12 for also carrying a 4.0.
