Bridgeport High School golf standout Mason Williams has captured the 2017 West Virginia Junior Amateur Championship recently held at Canaan Valley Resort. Williams shot a two-day 144 to tie for the winning score and was declared tournament winner after a four-hole playoff round.

“I was leading after the first day – shooting a 71 and Jacob Nickell shot a 73,” Williams said.

On day two, Williams shot a 73 and Nickell finished with a 71.

This is Williams’ first victory in the Junior Amateur, which was held June 27-28.

“I got second place two years ago and the year before that, I won in my age division, but I’ve never won the actual tournament,” he said.

The win gives Williams an exemption into this year’s West Virginia Open and next year’s West Virginia Amateur.

In addition to capturing the win, Williams said perks of the tournament included playing with golfers from around West Virginia he has previously met and competed with.

“There were close to 50 or 60 guys and I pretty much knew all of them,” said Williams, mentioning Nickell and Kyle Wensel of Wheeling and Christian Boyd of Charles Town, among others.

Williams said he likes the Canaan Valley course.

“It’s pretty open and you can hit the driver pretty much wherever; the greens are pretty hard though,” he said. “It’s not one of my favorites, but it is a nice course.”

His favorite course to play happens to be Pete Dye, he said.

Williams recently tied for 27th place in the Future Masters Tournament. He was the only golfer from West Virginia participating in the national tournament which was held in Dothan, Alabama.
