USA Today's High School sports has announced the Gatorade 2015-16 Girls Track & Field Athletes of the year for each state. And not surprisingly, senior-to-be McKenna Smith has earned the honor for West Virginia.
Smith turned in arguably the most dominant showing ever at the this year's Class AA state championship. She not only won four events, but set four meet records and three state records in the process. Smith won the 100, 200 and 400 meter dashes, while also winning the 300 meter hurdles.
The 40 points garnered by Smith easily earned her high medalist honors. Her return for the 2017 track season makes the Indians arguably the favorite for the upcoming campaign.
However, Gatorade didn't just pick Smith based on her track exploits. She was also chosen based on her academic achievement, personal character, sportsmanship, volunteerism and community leadership.
