Cody's to Raffle Hockey Sticks to Raise Funds for Families Affected By Bus Tragedy In Canada

On April 6, the hockey community was rocked by the tragic accident that killed 15 aboard a junior hockey team bus on route to a playoff game in Canada.  Mourners from around the world offered sympathy for those who were lost, including ten players, aged 16 to 21.  Locally, Cody Thrasher wanted to find a way to assist the grieving families.

Almost immediately after the reports of the accident hit the news, social media began to post makeshift tributes to the players, showing hockey sticks left out on porches in honor of those injured or slain.  Having a staff member who is a huge hockey fan, Cody’s placed hockey sticks on display and decided to raffle them off in order to make a donation to the families involved.

“I had a friend in college who was a hardcore hockey fan and I’ve seen first-hand how close the hockey community is,” said Thrasher.  “When this tragedy happened, our staff just wanted to find a way to help and the hockey stick raffle came to mind.”

Tickets to win one of two hockey sticks are available at Cody’s Restaurant, located at White Oaks.  Each ticket is $3.00, with all proceeds going to the families affected.  The drawing will be at the end of April and winners will be notified.

“When I think of how tight knit the Bridgeport community is, I can only imagine how an accident like the bus crash could affect a small community like the one where they lived,” said Thrasher.  “The pain they are feeling has been far-reaching and we are humbled to be able to help in any way we can.”
