The start of the school year is still several weeks away, but the start of 2021-21 high school sports season officially kicks off Monday. Multiple fall sports programs will begin with practices and tryouts.

The first team that gets its season started each year is the Bridgeport High School golf team. The team will look to set up their roster for the first match with tryouts set Monday at the Bridgeport Country Club at 8 a.m.

Coach Fred Wilhelm said the tryouts will consist of 27 holes. On Monday, there will be a practice round of 18 holes and that will be followed by the three-day tryouts with nine holes on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

Student-athletes must have a physical form filled out or turned into Athletic Director and Assistant Principal Mark Jones. Wilhelm said to call 304-842-3693 with questions.

First-year Indians head football Coach Tyler Phares will be getting things started early Monday. The Indians will begin football camp at 7 a.m. and will go to 10 a.m.

Practices will take place at Wayne Jamison Field. Phares said the Indians plan to go 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. Monday through Friday.

Those planning on participating need to bring cleats and a completed physical form and be ready to practice. Phares said the program will provide water for the students.

The Bridgeport varsity cheerleading team will have a one-day tryout for those looking to join the squad. Coach Natalie Hathaway said the tryout will be held at the Bridgeport High School gymnasium.

The tryout practice will be at 9 a.m. Monday. Future practice schedules will be announced Monday by Hathaway.

Hathaway said students need to bring a water bottle and if they haven’t had a physical after May 1, they need a completed physical form.

On the girls soccer front, Coach Sam McKinney said the initial practice will take place at 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the City Park Soccer Field. There will be an evening practice from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Training Tradition. McKinney said directions will be provided to the location at the morning practice.

McKinney said those interested in playing need to come ready to practice. He said cleats, shin guards, and water should be brought by interested student-athletes.

A completed and up-to-date physical form is also required.

On the boys’ and girls’ cross country front, first-year Coach Nathaniel Lutyens will kick things off at 8 a.m. at Bridgeport City Park. He said those coming will meet just inside the park’s entrance at the first pavilion.

Lutyens said those coming need to be ready to run and have their running shoes with them. He said anyone who has not turned in an updated physical form needs to do so.

The teams will practice at 8 a.m. all week.

The boys’ soccer team and Coach Keith Dumas will start early Monday with two-a-day sessions. The team will meet at the track at Wayne Jamison Field at 6 a.m. and will go to 7:30 a.m. and come back later for 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. practice, also at Jamison Field.

Dumas said individuals need to be ready to practice with cleats and running as well as having water, although it will be available. Individuals also need to have an up-to-date physical form if one has not already been provided.

The team will go two-a-days Monday, Wednesday, and Friday with solo practices Tuesday and Thursday. The entire week’s schedule and times will be discussed Monday for those who will not already have that information.
