Fast Break Registration Extended through Wednesday

By Julie Perine on September 16, 2019 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

The registration deadline for Bridgeport Parks and Recreation's Fast Break basketball league has been extended through Wednesday, Sept. 18.

"We do want to have all interested in playing registered prior to the evaluations (Wed, Sept 18) to ensure teams are evenly split," said Recreation Coordinator Katie Squires. "Also a note that may help some high schoolers determine if they can play - all high school games will be at 7 p.m. or 8 p.m.. I know some who play a sport weren’t sure they could make a 6 p.m. game but high school is a bit later this year."

The league runs Sept. 23 through Oct. 31 and is open to middle school and high school players.

All Fast Break activities will take place this year at Johnson Elementary. Each team will play 10 officiated games. The league is limited to 64 players in each division and volunteer coaches are needed.
Squires said many middle and high schoolers use Fast Break as a tune-up for school try-outs in November.

"It’s a great chance for kids  to work on their ball skills or shots prior to basketball season," she said.

Player evaluations will be held Sept. 18; middle school division at 6 p.m. and high school division at 7 p.m.

Although the program serves as a good pre-season activity for those planning to try out for school teams, it's also a good alternative for those who just want to play on a rec league for fun.

"That's true especially for kids who come up through our K-3 program and play Jerry West, staying active for all that time and then aging out of the program," said Parks and Recreation Director Joe Shuttleworth. "They hit this middle school/high school age group and that's where a lot of kids tend to drop off organized sports because they don't want to play school teams or don't make their school teams. This helps them stay active."

The true goal is recreation, Shuttleworth said.

"We just want to provide a fun opportunity for kids to get moving, play a team sport and have fun," he said. "We do our best to try to create team parity and include everyone."

Interest to serve as a volunteer coach can be indicated on the registration form.

Middle school games will be held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and high school games on Monday and Wednesday evenings. Registration is $85 per player. That includes a team T-shirt.

Registration forms are available at the Benedum Civic Center or can be downloaded HERE.
