For First Time in Program's 21-Year History, WVU Women's Soccer Team Ranked No.1 in Country

The West Virginia University women’s soccer team is ranked No. 1 for the first time in the program’s 21-year history, as the Mountaineers sit at the top of today’s TopDrawerSoccer.com Women’s Top 25 Poll.

The position is the squad’s highest in any poll, besting the No. 2 ranking the Mountaineers (6-0-1) received in the TDS.com and NSCAA Polls in 2015, as well as in last week’s Soccer America Top 25.

The women’s soccer team is the fourth program in WVU history to earn a No. 1 ranking, a feat previously achieved by the 18-time NCAA Champion rifle team, as well as the football and men’s basketball teams.

The Mountaineers are only the second soccer team in Big 12 Conference history to earn a No. 1 ranking. Texas previously was ranked No. 1 by Soccer America on Oct. 8, 2007.

WVU surged ahead three spots to the No. 1 position in today’s poll after earning a 3-1 win at then-No. 5 Duke on Sept. 9. The victory pushed the team’s 2016 record against top-10 squads to 2-0-1. The Mountaineers are 3-0-1 against ranked opponents this season.

Stanford (6-0-1) drops one spot to No. 2. Florida (5-1, 1-0 SEC) follows at No. 3, while Florida State (5-1) and Virginia (7-1) rank No. 4 and No. 5, respectively.

BYU (5-1) sits at No. 6 and is followed by Ohio State (6-1) at No. 7 and Duke (5-2-1) at No. 8. North Carolina (5-1-1) and USC (5-2) round out the top 10.

WVU is the lone-ranked Big 12 Conference team in today’s poll.

Riding a six-match win streak, the Mountaineers return to Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium this weekend for their final home nonconference matches. WVU opens against Princeton (6-0) on Friday, Sept. 16, at 7 p.m. The Mountaineers will then play host to No. 24 Georgetown (6-1) on Sunday, Sept. 18, at 1 p.m.

Friday is Olympic Night, and fans wearing their country’s favorite colors will receive free admission. Additionally, it’s WVU Faculty/Staff Night, and all WVU faculty and staff members also will receive free admission with a valid WVU Staff I.D.

Sunday is Youth Soccer Day, and all youths under the age of 13 who wear a youth soccer jersey will receive free admittance. A free soccer clinic will follow the match, weather permitting.

Tickets for both matches are available now at WVUGAME.com. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for youths under the age of 13 and senior citizens, and $2 for groups of 10 or more. WVU students are admitted free with a valid WVU Student I.D.
