The West Virginia University women’s basketball team picked up its second win of the season on Saturday evening, as the Mountaineers defeated LSU, 62-42, at the South Point Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. The victory also was a milestone.

With the win, WVU coach Mike Carey collected his 700th career victory of his 33-year coaching career, including the 412 that have come during his 20-year career at West Virginia.

The rest of Carey's wins came in Harrison County. Carey won 288 games as coach of the Salem University men’s team. He did that during a 13-year career in western Harrison County.

Carey is a Clarksburg native and a graduate of Liberty High School. He is also a graduate of then Salem College where he played for Coach Don Christie.

After the win, Carey shrugged off the achievement when asked about it.

“First of all, I’m old. That’s why. So, when you stay in it long enough, you have to win some of them. I’ve had a lot of great players that have played for me, and I’ve had a lot of great assistant coaches, a lot of great administrators. You don’t win those games by yourself. It takes everybody to win those games," said Carey. "I’m very happy. I’m just really concentrating on the team, and we have to keep moving forward.”
