Harrison County Parks and Rec Search for Licensed Basketball Officials

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on September 18, 2014 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

The Mon Valley Board of Referees is looking for men and women who wish to be a certified licensed athletic basketball official for the 2014-15 Season.  Candidates must be at least 18 years of age, in good physical condition and able to make decisions on their feet and stick to them.

The Harrison County Recreation Complex will host the class on beginning on Sunday, Sept. 28. Certification requires 30 hours of classroom and game-type activities.  MVB referee, Doug Comer, will lead the classroom and group activities while fellow referees and Board members will be on hand to discuss various game scenarios and “stories on the road.”

“I was blessed to go through the class four years ago, and now this is my opportunity to give back some of the knowledge that was given to me from some of the Board’s best referees,” related Doug Comer. “It’s a great experience for those who wish to continue to be a part of a great game.”

While the Rules of the Game will be the biggest part of the class, there will also be activities, game situations and group discussions. Upon completion of the class, new officials must join a local board in their geographic area and complete a physical prior to certification.

“We are going to give each student the necessary tools to not only complete the training, but to be successful.  Almost all of my classmates are active referees in the area at all levels.  How far you go depends on how much effort you put into it,” related Comer.

Cost for the class is $110, which includes State and Board Dues. And each candidate will receive a packet that includes the books and registration forms to be completed.

For more information on the program, please contact Doug Comer at 304 423-7802.
