SIGNING ONE

West Virginia University men’s basketball coach Bob Huggins has announced that Derek Culver has signed a national letter of intent for the 2018-19 academic year.

Culver, a 6-foot-10, 230-pound forward from Boardman, Ohio, currently attends Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, playing for coach Jason Smith. Brewster Academy opened its season on Nov. 8.

“Derek is a big and strong athletic guy who can run and should be exceptional in our Press Virginia defense,” Huggins said. “He will add much-needed rebounding to our team.”

Culver graduated from Warren G. Harding High School, playing for coach Andy Vlajkovich. As a junior, he led Harding to a 23-4 record and a regional semifinal appearance. In a season-ending playoff loss to Garfield Heights, Culver had 16 points and 12 rebounds per game.

For the season, Culver averaged 16 points, 10 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game. Culver earned All-Ohio Honorable Mention honors by the Associated Press as a junior. He played AAU basketball for the Ohio Basketball Club.

SIGNING TWO

West Virginia University men’s basketball coach Bob Huggins has announced that Andrew “Drew” Gordon has signed a national letter of intent for the 2018-19 academic year.

Gordon, a 6-foot-10, 235-pound forward, currently attends Northwest Florida State College in Niceville, Florida. Last year as a freshman, he averaged 3.7 points and 3.6 rebounds per game, while shooting 75.4 percent from the field. He is sitting out this season due a knee injury and will have three years of eligibility remaining at WVU.

“Drew’s upside is tremendous,” Huggins said. “He is a former wide receiver and defensive end who will bring much-needed toughness and athleticism to our program. He is another big man who can really run the floor and will fit in well with our Press Virginia defense.”

Gordon is from Clearwater, Florida, where he attended Dunedin High. As a senior, he averaged 9.8 points and 2.5 rebounds per game, leading Dunedin to the playoffs for the first time since 2002 and winning a postseason game for the first time since 1968.

Gordon starred on the football field, where he played wide receiver and defensive end at Dunedin High. In the Pinellas County senior all-star game, he was named defensive MVP.

He played AAU basketball for Team Speights, playing for coach Aaron Holmes.

Gordon joins Derek Culver (Boardman, Ohio/Warren G. Harding High/Brewster Academy [N.H.]) in the 2018-19 recruiting class.

The November signing period continues through next Wednesday.
