Matthew Aman, Jeremiah Dolan, Trevor Pandher and Hunter Friel combined talents to secure the 2018 WVSSAC Regional Golf Championship Monday afternoon at Bridgeport Country Club. 

 

"What a surprise," said Indian Golf Team Coach Fred Wilhelm. "After losing five seniors last year and starting all over from scratch, really the only kids I had with any experience were Matt and Pandhor. We had to find another score somewhere and Jeremiah Dolan came out of the blue and has played well for us all year long. I told him if he kept scores like that come tournament time, we'd be in business and things worked our way."

 

In addition to the team victory, Aman was low medalist with an 81.

 

That, Wilhelm said, wasn't a surprise. 

 

"He has scored in the lower 80s for us most of the year," Wilhelm said. "He was in the top group and kept fighting. All four were good golfers."

The Tribe’s team score of 256 also included Pandher’s 89 and Dolan’s 86. Those scores were also pretty consistent with what the golfers have shot throughout the season, Wilhelm said.

 

Robert C. Byrd landed second place in the Region II competition. Also competing were Roane County, Nicholas County, Lincoln High, Liberty High, Braxton County, Clay County, Elkins, Herbert Hoover and Lewis County.

 

The Indians will now compete at the state championship at Jones Golf Course at Oglebay Park in Wheeling the first week of October. 

 

"What a joy to travel up there to Oglebay, one of the hardest courses in the state," Wilhelm said. "It's a good challenge for the kids. Kids who know what to do with clubs in their hands don't have a problem and kids who just get lucky learn the hard way on that course. I'm really happy for the kids."
