The WVSSAC Region II Class AA golf tournament will be held Monday at Bridgeport Country Club and that's good for Bridgeport High School, Coach Fred Wilhelm said.

“In golf, you’re not really playing against anybody; you’re playing the course,” he said. “This is the same course we’ve played all season. Things should take care of themselves and we should be fine.”

Playing for the Indians will be Mason Williams, Matt Aman, Ryan McGee and Josh Kaiser.

Williams has consistently been the team leader, either emerging low medalist or close to it from every match this season. The BHS junior has averaged a 72 for 18 holes. Teammates Aman, McGee and Kaiser have averaged 86, 88 and 92, respectively, Wilhelm said.

At regional play, the three low scores determine team placement. The high score is dropped.

The Tribe has had a good season and though the Indians only placed sixth in the Big 10 tournament, Wilhelm isn’t too concerned.

“A couple of kids went higher than their average,” he said. “Between fourth place and ours, there were only two strokes.”

As the region has changed this year, there could be some surprises. Eastern Panhandle teams such as Berkeley Springs, Keyser and Frankfort who are usually in Region II are not this year. Teams coming into the region include Roane County, Clay County and Herbert Hoover.

“Also, we have Elkins and Lewis County since both have moved down to AA this year,” Wilhelm said.

Rounding out the region are Liberty, Lincoln and Robert C. Byrd, all who BHS outplayed during regular season.

“Most of the teams we’ve played in the Big 10 – other than being two strokes behind Elkins – we’ve beaten all of them,” Wilhelm said.

Though he’s not certain what to expect from the southern teams, Wilhelm believes the teams to beat tomorrow will be Roane County and Elkins.

Winning and runner-up teams will advance to the state tournament Oct. 4 and 5 at Oglebay Park, Wheeling. Also, the two low medalists not on the winning or runner-up team will advance to states as well.

The Region II tournament begins 9 a.m. Monday at Bridgeport Country Club.
