Indians, Aman Begin Class AA State Action Today at Jones Golf Course at Wheeling's Oglebay Park

Last year, the Tribe golf team finished third among Class AA teams in the state, but the Indians' Mason Williams was awarded Class AA low medalist in the WVSSAC tournament, shooting 70 on day one and 76 on day two.

Once again, the Indians are among competitors in the Class AA action at Jones Golf Course at Wheeling's Oglebay Park, which begins today and concludes Wednesday.

Bridgeport's Matthew Aman, Jeremiah Dolan, Trevor Pandher and Hunter Friel combined talents to secure the 2018 WVSSAC Regional Golf Championship Sept. 24 at Bridgeport Country Club.

"After losing five seniors last year and starting all over from scratch, really the only kids I had with any experience were Matt and Pandhor," said Coach Fred Wilhelm. "We had to find another score somewhere and Jeremiah Dolan came out of the blue and has played well for us all year long. I told him if he kept scores like that come tournament time, we'd be in business and things worked our way."

Aman was Region II low medalist with an 81, a score consistent with what the BHS sophomore has been shooting all season, Wilhelm said.

The Tribe’s regional victory score of 256 also included Pandher’s 89 and Dolan’s 86, also consistent with this season's play, Wilhelm said.

At last year's state golf match, the Tribe's
score after two days of play was 503; Brayden Lesher  87 and 89; Aman 91 and 90 and Pandher, 105 and 98.

Taking the Class AA team title in 2017 was Wyoming East with Fairmont Senior finishing second.

Wilhelm looks forward to seeing what his team and Aman will do on the state level at one of the toughest courses in the state.

"It's a good challenge for the kids. Kids who know what to do with clubs in their hands don't have a problem and kids who just get lucky learn the hard way on that course," he said. "I'm really happy for the kids."

Also representing Region II in Class AA action will be Robert C. Byrd, runners-up in last week's regional match. Lewis County's Ayden Wyckoff and Lincoln High School's Payton Moore also earned spots in this week's state golf tournament and are vying for medalist honors.
