Indians Girls Basketball Team Sees Four-Game Win Streak End at Hands of Lincon, but Not Without Battle

Bridgeport's girls' basketball team saw their four-game win streak come to an end Thursday night at home against Class AA No. 2 and undefeated Lincoln by a 62-46 score.

The loss dropped the Tribe to 11-8 on the year.

BHS was up 39-37 late in the third period when the Cougars took over. The visitors from Shinnston closed the period with a 12-0 run to lead 49-39 with eight minutes to play and never looked back. In fact, LHS outscored Bridgeport 13-7 in the fourth as the hosts would get no closer than eight points in the fourth period.

The Tribe used a balanced offensive attack and handled the Cougars' pressure for much of the early stages of the game to keep things competitive. Hope Chalfant led the way with 13 points, while Gianina Renzelli and Stephanie Alvaro both finished with 10 points. Renzelli also added five steals.

Although the turnovers were close with BHS committing 21 and Lincoln 17, the Cougars converted many of Bridgeport's miscues into offense. In particular, the late third period run was fueled by turnovers and baskets off of those turnovers.

The setback came following a 64-46 win last Saturday against East Fairmont. The Indians won that game in Marion County.

Chalfant and Emily Riggs led the way in the win. Chalfant led the way with 25 points, while Riggs added 15 as BHS jumped out to a 22-8 lead after one period and never looked back.

Bridgeport will begin the final week of the regular season on Monday. The Indians will face Robert C. Byrd in their final home game Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
