Bridgeport High School’s junior varsity football squad mirrored the varsity’s 50-13 victory against Buckhannon-Upshur last Thursday by putting up their own 50-0 win over the Bucs Monday at Wayne Jamison Field.

The game got off to a fast start after two runs of 10 or more yards by Chapin Murphy. After the Indians plowed down the field, Murphy was able to punch it in from two yards out for the first score of the game. After a missed two-point conversion, the Indians led 6-0.

Bridgeport would get the ball right back after a fumble by the Bucs. This time the Indians relied on the legs of Brice Haines and marched the ball right down the field, however the touchdown would once again be scored by Murphy for a 12-0 lead.

Buckhannon’s next drive came up empty, and the visitors would have to give the ball right back to the Indians after a couple of tackles for loss by Jimmy Allison and Zack Kimble. On the next drive Bridgeport unveiled its air attack and quarterback John Merica threw a short out route to Sebastian Meade, who was able to scamper for a 29-yard touchdown reception.

Murphy added the two point conversion and the lead was now 20-0. Another three and out led to yet another BHS score, this time on the legs of Merica and what would eventually be a 28-0 score.

“We were able to get to a quick start and once we scored a couple of times we never looked back,” said Haines.

The second half proved to be no obstacle for the Indians after they quickly scored again, this time on an interception touchdown run by Haines; leaving the score 36-0. More of the same for the Indians continued and touchdowns were added by Murphy and Maverick Eddy to close things out.

“It was good to start the season off with a win,” said CJ McGhee.

The squad moves to 1-0 on the season and will travel to Wheeling Island Stadium Monday afternoon to take on Wheeling Park.
