Bridgeport’s Mason Williams emerged from today’s WVSSAC Region II, Class AA golf tournament as low medalist with a ticket to states next week at Wheeling’s Oglebay Park.

As a team, the Tribe finished second by a slim margin to defending defending Class AA championship team Roane County. That runner-up status also gives the Indians a spot at the WVSSAC state tournament Oct. 4 and 5. Bridgeport finished with 246 and Roane County with 243.

At Bridgeport Country Club, Williams - a BHS junior - repeated his 2015 Region II, Class AA performance by shooting a 66. His teammates stepped up to do well enough to secure the second place finish. Matt Aman shot an 88, Ryan McGee a 92 and Josh Kaiser a 94. As Kaiser’s score was the highest, it was dropped as per regional format; the same format that's observed on the state level.

Taking first place in today’s regional action was Roane County, new to Region II this year. Going into today's match, Coach Fred Wilhelm said Roane County was among top teams in the tournament. Roane County's Caleb Moore was medalist runner-up; shooting a 79, 13 strokes behind Williams.

Having led the Indians all season long, he said he felt good going into today’s match.

“I’ve been playing pretty well so I was pretty confident,” he said. “It was probably hole number four – when I was three under – that I realized I was going to do pretty well.”

Williams said his group finished play about 30 minutes before this afternoon’s storm hit.

“It was a really nice morning, staying about 70 degrees the whole way around,” he said.

Those still on the course when the storm started were called in until after it left the area. The delay was about 45 minutes.

Two players qualified from states from other teams. Ayden Wyckoff  of Liberty High School and Dylan Reckart of Elkins shot an 80 and 81, respectively, earning their way to Wheeling.

Williams and the Indians took first place at last year’s Region II, Class AA tournament and Mason went on to earn low medalist honors at states with teammate Marco Oliverio runner-up. As a team, the Indians finished third at states in 2015.
