Irish's Cava Class A 1st Team All-State Selection; 4 Other County Standouts Land 2nd Team Honors

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on December 09, 2014 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Although the season is over for Notre Dame High School’s football team, the postseason honors are coming in. And thanks to an impressive 8-3 season that saw the Fighting Irish finish ranked No. 3 in the state, the club was well represented on the Class A All-State team released this morning.

Senior Irish running back Santino Cava, a Bridgeport resident, was named to the first team offensive unit. Cava finished the year and his career as Harrison County’s all-time leading rusher with more than 5,000 yards.  He was the only Harrison County athlete chosen to the unit, which is picked by members of the West Virginia Sports Writer’s Association’s membership and a ballot of coaches.

Notre Dame’s Adam McMunn was one of four individuals from the county listed on the second. McMunn earned his position as the second unit’s kicker. Dan Shafer, who helped lead the way for Cava, from Notre Dame was named as an offensive lineman.

South Harrison also had a special teams’ member chosen for the second unit. Senior Garrett Wilkins was chosen as the punter. Junior defensive lineman James Childers was selected as well to the second unit.

Three county players were chosen as special honorable mention selections. Spencer Harlow and Sal Lopez of Notre Dame were joined by South Harrison’s Nick Rush. On the honorable mention list, the Irish’s Gaje Brown and Jordan Miller were selected.
