It's Happening: The Hopi Indian Tribe's Passion and Tradition of Excellence

By Julie Perine on September 25, 2016 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

From now on, when I hear the phrase “Roll Tribe,” I believe I’ll also think of the Hopi Indians. A TV documentary I recently caught went into depth about this northeastern Arizona tribe; their passion, their discipline and their unity.

For 26 straight years, Hopi High School has captured the Arizona state cross country title. It’s a tradition of winning that the Hopis strive for and although they take humble pride in their victories, their running is about more than athleticism.

These native Americans live on what’s called the Black Mesa – a plateau that sets 1,000 feet above the grasslands. They refer to it a the center of the universe and it’s where they run and train on rugged terrain. They explained that many in the village incorporate running into their lifestyles. It’s sort of a form of discipline – even a prayer ritual for water in the dry desert land where agriculture is an important part of their lifeline.

They embrace their longtime culture, continuing to celebrate customs revolving around intricate colorful artworks, pottery, dance and spirituality.

Hopi translates “peaceful people” and they live most humbly in the adobe-style flat-roof homes; most without running water. It seems the tribe people need an outlet. Many run. Some unfortunately turn to drinking; thus many die young. Those who live persevere, determined to reach their goals and dreams.

I know here in Bridgeport we are very fortunate. All of our basic needs are met. We are furthermore blessed with proper athletic clothes, shoes and equipment, but more importantly an incredible support system as coaches, parents and the whole community rallies around our athletes. We should be thankful for all of that each and every day.

What I do believe our Tribe has in common with the Hopi Indians is heart and pride for tradition, history and putting forth best efforts and reaching for the highest stars in the reservation.

Here’s wishing the Hopis a continued tradition of cross country excellence and to Coach Rick Baker I think it is so admirable – not to mention totally incredible - that after being raised in the village and reaching your own personal best in the sport of choice that you have stayed with your Tribe to encourage and teach the next generations. Baker has coached the Hopi Bruins through all 26 state titles, the nation’s longest-running cross country state title streak.

This is the kind of story that should make us proud to be called Indians.

As always, Roll Tribe.
