Lady Braves Win Third Straight

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on April 16, 2014 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

On Monday evening, Caty Dennison took to the circle as the starting pitcher for the Bridgeport Lady Braves against the visiting Lady Eagles from Lumberport Middle School (LMS).  Just like her previous two outings, she pitched a complete game.  Her line read 6 innings pitched, gave up 5 runs, 1 earned run, 1 hit, 7 walks, and 11 strike outs.

Dennison was also the recipient of some timely hitting by her teammates.  In the bottom of the first inning, Kat Fortney reached first base on a dropped third strike.  She then stole second and came around to score as the throw went into center field.  Nicole LaRocca and Dennison then followed with back-to back singles.  Katelyn Stanley drone both of them home with a triple to right center field.  Laiken Cook was the next batter and brought Stanley home with an RBI ground out to second base.  At the end of the first inning it was Bridgeport Middle School 4 and LMS 0.

In the third inning, LMS scored four times.  A combination of three walks and four BMS fielding and throwing errors led directly to the four runs.  Scoring for LMS were M. Arcuri, L. Brooks, S. Hawkins, and M. Andrick.

The Lady Braves responded in the bottom of that same inning by scoring two runs.  With two outs, Laiken Cook singled.  Cook then stole second base.  Raeanne Beckner followed with a single scoring Cook.  The next two batters, Rahvin Hardman and Emilee Henderson, both singled.  That loaded the bases for Payton Merica.  Merica was then by a pitch that allowed Beckner to score.  After three innings of play the scoreboard read BMS 6 and LMS 4.

BMS added four more runs in the home half of the fourth inning.  LaRocca walked and then stole second.  She scored on an RBI single by Dennison.  Stanley followed by hitting her second triple of the game scoring Dennison.  Cook then reached base on an LMS infield error that allowed Stanley to score.  After Cook stole second base, Beckner worked out a walk.    Both advanced one base on a ground out by Hardman.  Henderson grounded out to second and Cook scored on the play.

The Lady Eagles scored their final run of the game in the top of the fifth.  K. Slack singled and went to second on an error.  She advanced to third via a wild pitch and scored on a pass ball.

The Lady Braves scored to end the game with two runs in the sixth inning.  Scoring were Starr Poe, who replaced Henderson in the batting order and Merica.  The final score was BMS 13 and LMS 5.

The win improved the Lady Braves record to 3 wins and 1 loss.  It also improved Dennison’s pitching record to 2 wins and 1 loss.

BMS was to have played the Washington-Irving Lady Hill Toppers Tuesday afternoon.  However, that game was canceled due to the inclement weather.

The Lady Braves return to action next Wednesday, April 23, 2014, when they travel to Lost Creek to battle the South Harrison Lady Hawks.  First pitch is set for 4:30 p.m.
