Lady Indians Claim 5-4 Victory Against Braxton County in Season Opener

After Thursday’s game with Grafton was rained out, the Bridgeport High School softball team got into action Friday with a home contest against Braxton County and claimed victory in the season opener.

The 5 p.m. game was a cold one and the weather likely affected the pitching, but the Tribe edged out a 5-4 win.

Back from last season as a second-team All-State pitcher, senior Danielle Dennison started at the mound.

“She pitched five pretty good innings,” Lopez said. “She gave up three runs and two hits, but she struck out five.”

A transfer from Lincoln High School, Allison Winans – also second-team All-State for the 2013-2014 season – went two innings and got the save. She also had a big day offensively, going two for four with a pair of RBIs.

The Lady Indians combined forces for six hits Friday.

“We hit the ball well and didn’t strike out,” Lopez said. “That was very encouraging.”

Braxton County played the field well and though junior Shae Tomasik was consistent with the bat, she ended up with just one hit.

“They made some nice plays on her,” Lopez said.

Dennison also added a hit and freshman Joplin Kehrer contributed both a hit and a run.

“The game saver was at the top of the seventh with a runner on first with one out and a girl hit a shot to center field and Taylor Smith ran it down and caught it,” Lopez said. “The coach didn’t think she would catch it and he sent a runner from first to try to tie the game. She was on her way to third base when Taylor caught it and made a double play at the end of the game. It ended in spectacular fashion.”

Though both BHS and Braxton endured the cold Friday, Saturday’s 1 p.m. game in Morgantown was canceled.

“It was only going to get in the mid-30s and there was no way,” Lopez said. “Morgantown’s coach agreed.”

The Lady Indians are back in action Monday with a 5 p.m. contest at Fairmont Senior.
