Lady Indians Have Net: Team Ready to Volley Sept. 3

Nearly two weeks into practice for the 2014 season, Ali Curry finds this year’s BHS Volleyball Team to have some real promise.

“It’s definitely a talented group, which includes some younger players who have great potential,” said the first-year coach. “This summer, I got to see a little bit here and there and the girls worked together very well and were very helpful with one another.”

The girls are very receptive of assistance and advice offered by their peers. Among Curry's 18 girls are three seniors and a handful each of juniors, sophomores and freshmen.

“We have two girls who just moved here – one from New York and another from Florida,” Curry said.

Sophomore Abby Strait is among Curry’s strongest hitters and both Emily Griffith and Andrea Cooper have both been noticed for their leadership qualities. Also gaining Curry’s attention early on are Sydney Leatherman and Lexi Szerbra, both exceptional team players.

This past Tuesday, the team concentrated almost exclusively on working the net. There was a good reason for that, Curry said.

“The day before, we worked on nothing but passing and I think they were a little tired of passing,” Curry said. “I told them serving and passing are the two most important things. If you can’t serve, you can’t pass and if you can’t pass, you can’t play. We continued to hit that very, very hard, then we changed it up a little bit and gave them a chance to work on their swing at the net and we worked on approach. Then, we put that all together.”

Curry excelled in volleyball at Greenbrier East High School before attending and graduating from West Virginia Wesleyan College.
Being new to the immediate area, she said she’s not certain who to expect her biggest competition to be. But she has been warned about one local team.

“I’ve been told that Robert C. Byrd is usually the team that stands in our team’s way of advancing from sectionals to regionals,” she said.

The Lady Indians scrimmage Tuesday in Morgantown and begin play with a contest against Fairmont Sept. 3.
