Bridgeport Little League’s 10-11-year-old All Star team is currently playing in the West Virginia State Little League Tournament in Huntington.

On Friday, Bridgeport got off to a good start against Salt Rock.  Casey Tomasik and Cameron Cole pitched and gave up only one run.  Mitchell Duez and Tomasik both went 2-for 2 at the plate. Tomasik had three RBIs. However, it was Brody Nolte’s walk off 2-run homer that was the highlight of the game in the fourth inning that ended it at 11-1 after four frames.

Saturday Bridgeport hit Braxton County hard in a rain-delayed marathon game that saw the Bridgeport team win 14-2. Cole, Gene Hutchinson, and Austin Mann kept the Braxton hitters in check. The offense was led by JT Muller (3-for-4) and Tomasik, both hitting homeruns in another four-inning affair.

On Sunday, Bridgeport had a rematch of last year’s 9-and-10-year old state title game against St. Albans and took home a 9-2 win. Tomasik struck out five in two and two-thirds innings and gave up just two runs.

Duez came on in relief has he struck out four in two and two-thirds innings of work. Cole struck out the final St. Albans player in the sixth.

There were several game-changing plays with the first coming in the top of the second inning when Bridgeport was up 1-0. At that time, St. Albans singled to center and attempted to score a runner from second.  Duez came up firing from center field to catcher Randy Keener, who applied the tag at home to crush St. Albans’ momentum and end the inning.

A second game-changing moment came in the Bridgeport part of the fourth. With runners on second and third, Hutchinson hit a single that scored Tanner Bastin and Duez and put Bridgeport up 6 to 2.

Bridgeport advances to the semi-final single elimination games. The local squad will battle Martinsburg or Jefferson County Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

Coach Terry Cole said he is truly blessed to have such a wonderful group of kids to coach.
