MetroNews High School Football Power Poll has BHS Ranked a Bit Lower than Final WVSSAC Standings

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on November 12, 2019 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

In the poll that matters to West Virginia High School football teams, Bridgeport was ranked No. 2 in the state in the WVSSAC Class AA poll. That ranking, a computer-generated power ranking, gives the Indians homefield advantage throughout the playoffs.

When it comes to perception, members of the statewide media that vote in the MetroNews High School Football Power Rankings don’t believe the Tribe stands as the second-best team in the state. Instead, the Indians are down a notch.

In the final edition of the MetroNews Class AA standings voted on by radio broadcasters and sports writers from across the state, the Indians finished as the third-ranked team in Class AA. The 9-1 Tribe has been in that position for most of the polls this season.

Fairmont Senior has been the unanimous number one for weeks. The Polar Bears maintained that spot in their final appearance in the regular season poll and stand at 10-0 on the year. FSHS has not trailed all season.

Bluefield, at 9-1, remains the second-ranked team in the poll. Undefeated Poca, 10-0, is ranked in the No. 4 spot.

Rounding out the top five is 9-1 Keyser. The only loss by Golden Tornado was at the hands of Bridgeport. KHS has posted eight shutouts in its nine wins.

No other local teams are ranked in the Class AA top 10. Liberty and North Marion are in the “also receiving votes” portion of the poll.

In Class A, Doddridge County remains number one. The 10-0 Bulldogs received 16 of the 17 votes for first by the media. Martinsburg, 10-0, is a unanimous choice for the top spot in Class AAA.
