West Virginia University women’s basketball continues its run in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) with a semifinal matchup against Temple on Wednesday, April 1. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at the WVU Coliseum. 

 

WVU (22-14) is coming off a 75-70 overtime win versus Villanova on Sunday. Temple (20-16) knocked off Middle Tennessee 69-57 to advance to the WNIT semifinals. The winner of Wednesday’s contest will take on the winner of UCLA/Michigan in the WNIT Championship on Saturday, April 3 at 3 p.m. ET at a campus site to be determined. 

 

All tickets are on sale through the Mountaineer Ticket Office inside the Coliseum, at WVUGAME.com and by calling 1-800-WVU GAME. Fans are encouraged to purchase tickets online in advance at WVUGAME.com and select the Print-At-Home option to avoid lines at the ticket window on game day.

 

General admission tickets are $7, while youth tickets are $5. A discounted group rate of $4 is available, but must be purchased in advance. WVU students and Carey’s Crew members receive free admission courtesy of United Bank. A valid student ID or Carey’s Crew membership card must be shown to receive the free ticket. Flex plan tickets cannot be redeemed for WNIT games.

West Virginia has won a single-season record 18 games at the Coliseum this season. The Mountaineers are averaging 69.9 points during the tournament and giving up just 52.2 points per contest. During that span, Averee Fields has led the Mountaineers with 17.3 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. Bria Holmes is also in double-figures, averaging 16.3 points during the tournament. 

 

The Mountaineers and Owls meet for the 31st time on Wednesday and for the first time since 1995. The former Atlantic 10 foes last met on Feb. 13, 1995, in Philadelphia, as West Virginia prevailed 72-45. 

 

Temple has won 10 out of its last 12 games, including four straight victories in the WNIT. TU is averaging 69.2 points, while shooting 38.1 percent from the field. 

 

“They have five people averaging double-figures and they’re all five guards,” said coach Mike Carey. “We’re going to have to control their dribble penetration.”

 

Five Owls are averaging double-figures with Alliya Butts boasting a team-best 12.4 points per contest. Erica Covile is second on the team with 11.4 points and a team-best 8.4 rebounds per contest. Feyonda Fitzgerald (11.2), Tyonna Williams (10.7) and Tanaya Atkinson (10.6) round double-figure scoring.
