It was an historic season for the Robert C. Byrd baseball team as the Eagles won their first sectional title in 19 years and advanced to the state tournament for the first time in school history.

A big reason for the 2022 success was senior Nathaniel Junkins, who has been named the John Lowery Award Hitter of the Year by the West Virginia Sports Writers Association.

Junkins hit .461 with eight home runs, 46 RBIs, 11 doubles, two triples and added 16 stolen bases.

Junkins was also recently chosen as the Class AA First-Team All-State Captain.

Other Hitter of the Year finalists were Morgantown’s Aaron Jamison, Hurricane’s Ethan Spolarich and Logan’s Dawson Maynard.

Jamison batted .396 with 14 home runs and 44 RBIs for the regional finalist Mohigans, adding eight doubles and five triples.

Spolarich was a .438 hitter with seven home runs, 31 RBIs and 51 runs for the Class AAA champs.

Maynard posted a .495 batting average with 11 doubles, five triples, six home runs and 45 RBIs, leading the Wildcats to a second straight Class AA state championship.
