Scoring Picks Up for BHS Boys Soccer Team, Which is Now 4-2-1 Overall This Season

Coming off a 0-0 tie against Lewis County, Bridgeport boys soccer coach Keith Dumas was a bit perplexed at his team’s struggles in finding the back of the net.

He also knew that there was too much offensive firepower on his team for the lack of goals to develop into a trend.

That proved to be the case in the Tribe’s previous two outings where they scored a combined 15 goals in a 9-1 victory against Preston and a 6-0 win against Grafton.

“I think the struggling to score goals was because of a couple of different factors,” BHS coach Keith Dumas said. “I think  these kids haven’t played real soccer in about six months coming into the start of the season. Just getting back on the field it takes time. Our chemistry is also getting better and that’s something we hope to keep building throughout the season.”

The two wins improved their record to 4-2-1 heading into Thursday’s game at Parkersburg.

Of those 15 goals, Brock Amos had seven of them. The junior had three goals and an assist against Preston and came back with four goals against the Bearcats. For the season, Amos now has 12 goals.

“Brock really hadn’t been a factor in terms of scoring until last week,” Dumas said. “I think he’s playing with a lot more confidence and I think the other guys are having more confidence in getting him the ball in positions where he can finish.”

Also, for the Indians in the win against the Knights, Kyle McCarthy had two goals and one assist, while Tyler Norman, Nathan Jackson and Julian Orlando each had a goal.

Haden McCarthy assisted on three goals against Preston, Ezra Myers added two assists and Brody Nolte added one assist.

Haden McCarthy complimented Amos’ four goals against the Bearcats with a par of his own and Kyle McCarthy had three assists.
Luke Malenich and Levi Crayton each had a save in goal in the win against Preston. Crayton went the distance against the Bearcats and posted a save in that match as well.

The Indians had a home game scheduled for Saturday against Charleston Catholic, but with that school being in Kanawha County, which is unable to play athletic events because of COVID-19 restrictions, the game has been canceled. As of now, there is not a replacement game lined up.
