The winner of Bridgeport High School’s “Scout Team Player of the Week” for his effort in the week leading up to last week’s high school football game with Elkins is sophomore Sam Drake. Drake played his part in helping the Indians pick up another win, this time against the Tigers in what turned out to be a hard fought 21-3 victory.

Drake, who comes in a 5’10 and 180 pounds, was chosen by the BHS coaching staff for the weekly honor. The honor is in its first year.

“He’s a great kid who plays for the love of the game,” said BHS Assistant Coach and Defensive Coordinator Adam King.

Drake worked on the scout team’s offense at center and defensive unit at linebacker leading up to the game with Elkins. The effort proved critical as the Tigers put up a battle and Bridgeport’s first unit played for much of the game for the first time since their week four loss to Fairmont Senior.

The BHS offense scored just seven points to lead 7-3 at the half. However, the defense was solid throughout as it held the Tigers to 99 total yards and the offense finally came through with a pair of second half touchdowns.

“Sam displays a positive attitude and is willing to go the extra mile so the team wins,” said King.

The BHS coaching staff initiated the program this year to recognize those who help prepare the varsity each week. The winner is chosen based on a vote of the coaches.
