Alderson Broaddus athletic director Dennis Creehan announced Steve Tierney as the Battlers head women's basketball coach at a media conference Wednesday morning.

 

Tierney makes his return to the sidelines after being out of coaching for the past three seasons. He was most recently the head coach at West Virginia Wesleyan where he compiled a 135-111 record in eight seasons with the Bobcats. He is still the winningest women's basketball coach in West Virginia Wesleyan history.

 

Over his final four seasons with the Bobcats Tierney posted a 76-40 record and led West Virginia Wesleyan to its first WVIAC title in 2010 and earning conference Coach of the Year honors.

 

Tierney’s teams also performed in the classroom achieving a at least a 3.2 team GPA each semester. In 2006-2007 his team ranked 16th on the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Academic Top 25 Honor Roll.

 

"Our student academic life must come first and I will do all that I can to make sure our students graduate and become productive members of society," said Tierney.

 

Prior to being the head coach at West Virginia Wesleyan he spent a season as an assistant with the Bobcats. He also served as an assistant at Fairmont State from 2000-2005.

 

Tierney also has international coaching experience. In 1993 he served as an assistant with the Basket-Flyers in Vienna, Austria. He also coached a pair of teams in New Zealand, leading the Hawkes Bay Hawks in 1990 and Govenor's Wairipapa from 1988-1990.

 

Tierney began his coaching career as an assistant with South Suburban College in 1988 before joining the West Virginia Wesleyan men's basketball staff as a graduate assistant for the 1991-92 season. He served as the interim women's basketball coach with the Bobcats for the second half of the 1991-1992 season.

 

"The faculty, staff and administration that I have met have an enthusiasm that is genuine and I look to bring that same kind of enthusiasm to our women's basketball program," Tierney said. "My teams in the past have been know for an up tempo, fast style of play and we want to do the same at Alderson Broaddus."
