By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on March 04, 2014 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Following a 71-69 win over then-No. 6 ranked Baylor, the West Virginia women’s basketball team earns its highest ranking this season at No. 7 in today’s Associated Press Poll.

The highest-ever ranking in program history was No. 6 on Dec. 20, 2010 and WVU remained there for four consecutive weeks. That season, WVU also had five seniors.

With Sunday’s win, the Mountaineers are in contention for a share of the Big 12 Regular-Season title. WVU is 26-3 overall and sits atop the league standings at 15-2 in Big 12 play. Baylor dropped from No. 6 last week to No. 9 in this week’s poll, while the Mountaineers become the highest-ranked Big 12 team, since entering the polls just six weeks ago.

The Mountaineers joined Stanford as the only team to shoot 50 percent against Baylor in a span of 282 games, while snapping the Lady Bears’ 35-game home conference win streak.

WVU is 5-1 against opponents ranked in the AP top 25 this season, and for the first time in program history, the Mountaineers have recorded four wins over top 15 opponents in a season.

The Mountaineers return to the WVU Coliseum one final time this season, tonight at 7 p.m., against Kansas. There are five seniors on this year’s team: Asya Bussie, Christal Caldwell, Brooke Hampton, Jess Harlee and Taylor Palmer, who will be recognized in their final home game. Fans are encouraged to be in their seats by 6:45 p.m., for the pregame senior recognition.

In addition to celebrating the seniors, the Mountaineers will say thank you with Fan Appreciation Night. Small popcorn and small drinks will be available for only $1 each. The first 1,500 fans will also receive a special senior poster courtesy of Coke Zero. Other giveaway items will also be available for fans.

Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for youth/senior citizens while groups of 10 or more pay just $2 each. Fans are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance at WVUGAME.com and select the Print-At-Home option to avoid lines at the gate on game day.
