Tribe's Stalnaker Named to Big 10's Girls Hoops First Team; Renzelli, Riggs Earn Spots on Second Unit

With the girls’ basketball season now in the rearview mirror, awards for the 2016-17 high school campaign are beginning to come out. Most recently, the Big 10 Conference released its All-Big 10 first and second team squads.

Not surprisingly, Bridgeport’s leading scorer Quinn Stalnaker was named to the unit. The team is picked annually by the coaches of the league.

Stalnaker led Bridgeport to the Class AA state tournament where they fell to eventual state champion Fairmont Senior in the first round. The Indians finished the year 16-10.

For the year, Stalnaker averaged more than 15 points per game. However, it was her consistency in the paint that made her a dangerous weapon for second-year Coach Dennis Hutson. She finished the year shooting nearly 71 percent from the floor and 80 percent from the foul line.

“What she was able to accomplish is a direct result of hard work. She put in the time and effort in the offseason and the end result was an impressive senior season,” said Coach Dennis Hutson.

Bridgeport had two other players recognized. Senior point guard Gianina Renzelli and sophomore swing player Emily Riggs were named by the league’s coaches to the second team.

Buckhannon-Upshur walked away with the top individual league honors. B-U point guard Hannah McClung was named player of the year, while Coach Jeremy Maxwell was voted as coach of the year.
