The West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission (WVSSAC) is pleased to announce that Marshall University will be the host for the 2019 WV High School State Cheerleading Championships on December 14, 2019.  The event has long been held at the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center (CCCC), but will now be held at Marshall University.

WVSSAC Executive Director Bernie Dolan released the following statement:  “We sincerely thank John Robertson and his staff at the CCCC for their many years of support and assistance with the event.  We also appreciate all of the support we received from the Charleston Convention and Visitors Bureau.  All of our state championship venues are put out for bid every four years, and Marshall University was the successful bidder this year.  We are excited about this new partnership and look forward to working with Marshall University and the city of Huntington as we begin planning for the 2019 championships.”

“We’re excited to have the West Virginia High School Cheerleading Championships come to Huntington,” Marshall’s Director of Athletics Mike Hamrick said. “The ability to get so many young people onto our campus, with the possibility that they could one day be students here, is a big win for Marshall University and the city of Huntington. Getting this event for the next four years at Marshall makes a statement about the direction of our university. I want to thank mayor Steve Williams and CVB Board President Tyson Compton for their support in helping us secure this event and making this venture successful in the future.”

“We are thrilled to have been chosen, in partnership with Marshall University, to host the state cheerleading championships in Huntington,” said Tyson Compton, President of the Cabell-Huntington Convention & Visitors Bureau. “We worked closely with Mike Hamrick and his team at MU and thank WVSSAC for allowing us the opportunity to participate in this stellar event. We are anxious to welcome these young athletes and visitors to our city. The CVB, Marshall University and the City of Huntington stand ready to ensure our guests have a great experience in Huntington and feel welcome and wanted during their time here. ”

The WV State High School Cheerleading Championships are held annually and showcase both regional winners and runners up in each classification from high school cheer teams across the state.  Teams compete in a technical cheer routine as well as an open routine to determine the overall champion.  The 2018 winners were Tug Valley in Class A, Winfield in Class AA, and Wheeling Park in Class AAA.
