West Virginia University junior guard Tynice Martin will miss the 2017-18 season while recovering from a foot injury as announced by coach Mike Carey on Tuesday. 

 

The Atlanta native sustained the injury at USA Basketball U23 National Team Trials on Aug. 3, 2017, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She underwent surgery soon after in Colorado with the possibility of returning to the court this season. However, an additional surgery was recently required and she will now take a redshirt season for the 2017-18 academic year. 

 

Martin was the 2017 Big 12 Championship Most Outstanding Player after leading scoring 82 points and grabbing 12 rebounds to lead WVU to the tournament title. She was named an Associated Press All-America Honorable Mention as well as a Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) All-America Honorable Mention, becoming the first Mountaineer sophomore in program history to earn the accolades. 

 

In the 2016-17 season, Martin led the team with 18.6 points per game. She ranked first in the Big 12 with 35.6 minutes played per game, second in scoring with 18.6 points per game, fifth with 2.2 three-point fields goals made per game, fifth with 1.8 steals per game, seventh with an 81.8 free throw percentage and 12th with a 36.5 3-point field goal percentage. Nationally, Martin ranked 10th in field goals attempted (571), 11th in minutes played (1,246), 20th in final points (651), 32nd in field goals made (227) and 40th in points per game (18.6 ppg). 

 

Martin will have two seasons of eligibility remaining and is expected to return to the lineup in 2018-19.
