Coach Mike Carey received the second-most votes for the Associated Press Women’s Coach of the Year after guiding the West Virginiawomen’s basketball team to one of its most decorated seasons in program history.

“I was really proud of the way the team pulled together, and the season that we had,” Carey said. “It always feels good to know that your hard work is recognized, but at the end of the day, it is our players who deserve the credit.”

Notre Dame coach Muffet McGraw was awarded the honor with 17 votes, while Carey collected eight votes for second in running. Connecticut’s Geno Auriemma had six votes behind Carey, while South Carolina’s Dawn Staley received five votes.

The Mountaineers closed the 2013-14 season with a share of the Big 12 Conference Regular-Season Title, a 2014 Big 12 Championship appearance, the most wins in program history with 30 and their fifth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.

Carey holds a 562-248 all-time coaching record, including a 274-146 record at the helm of WVU’s program. He holds the highest winning percentage (65.2%) in women’s basketball program history at WVU and reached 200 wins the fastest.
