By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on August 21, 2018 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

The West Virginia University Varsity Club has announced that the 1988 Mountaineer Football team, one of only two teams to go 11-0 in school history, will be recognized for its 30-year anniversary the weekend of Sept. 7-8, with activities surrounding the home-opening football game vs. Youngstown State.

The 1988 squad posted an undefeated regular season record of 11-0, including key wins over Penn State, Boston College, Maryland and Syracuse. The Mountaineers earned a berth in the 1989 Sunkist Fiesta Bowl national championship game against No. 1 Notre Dame in Tempe, Arizona.

There will be a private gathering honoring the team on Friday, Sept. 7, and then the team will be recognized during the Youngstown State game on Sept. 8. Team members also will make appearances on the GoMart Tailgate Show – the official WVU-YSU pregame radio show on the Mountaineers Sports Network from IMG on Sept. 8.

In the stadium, a special edition 1988 season commemorative stadium cup will be available inside Milan Puskar Stadium at concession stands during the Youngstown State game. Also, the ‘Building Mountaineer Football, presented by Dan Ryan Builders’ feature will highlight great games from the 1988 season all year long during media timeouts.

The WVU football social media accounts also will be paying tribute with ‘Throwback Thursdays’ and rebroadcasts of big wins from that special year. The games can be viewed each day this week at 2 p.m. on WVUfootball on Facebook.

Tickets for the 2018 home opener game are available online at WVUGAME.com or by calling 1-800-WVU GAME. It’s a Family Day – fans can purchase four tickets and a $25 concessions voucher for just $150 per package.
