Bridgeport High School didn’t bring home a state championship from the WVSSAC high school state golf tournament, but they did earn three individual awards.

Class AA medalist was Mason Williams and runner-up was Marco Oliverio. Chosen by the WVSSAC as Class AA Coach of the Year was the Indians’ Fred Wilhelm. As a team, BHS wound up in third place, three strokes behind runner-up team Wyoming East and six strokes behind Roane County, which captured the Class AA state title.

Wilhelm said his team did well and that he is pleased.

“We had a 233 on the day and I’ll take that any day,” Wilhelm said. “We played against some good competition. We needed Roane County and Wyoming East to fumble a little bit, but both teams held tight.”

Both Williams and Oliverio shot a 74 today. Ben Smith added an 85 for the team’s composite 233. Also playing for the Indians today was Ryan McGee, who shot a 102. Only the top three scores are counted in state tournament action.

Held at Oglebay Park’s Trent Jones Golf Course in Wheeling, the tournament began Tuesday. After day one, BHS was in fourth place. Williams’ first-day score of 73 was the lowest Class AA score of the day.

“He led yesterday and held on to it today,” Wilhelm said.

Williams not only outscored every Class AA golfer at the tournament, but was low medalist, even among Class AAA golfers.

Oliverio shot a 77 Tuesday and Smith shot an 89. Andre Mardmomen shot a 106. That score was dropped.

Wilhelm said his team represented Bridgeport well and he is honored and humbled to be named 2015 Class AA Coach of the Year.

“It’s just a tribute to all the kids I’ve had in my program, working with the parents and every kid on the team,” he said. “Awards like this are earned through them. I’ve had a fun time with the kids through the years. That’s why I do it.”

This is Wilhelm’s 13th year with the BHS golf program.
