The Grapevine: A Look at the Special Month of March

By Rosalyn Queen on March 28, 2024 from The Grapevine via Connect-Bridgeport.com

March is celebrated as Women’s History Month.  A special observance for this month was the movie “Cabrini.”

Members of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church were treated to the movie by an anonymous donor.  Approximately 150 members were able to view the movie.  It was a very moving movie as it captured the life of Mother Cabrini who was the first American woman to be canonized.

She certainly epitomized the woman who was there to make a difference.  Ignoring her own illness, she strove to make life better for those less fortunate, who were living in a poor place. She fought prejudice, especially to Italians.

The movie was a little over two hours and kept me spell bound every minute.  I strongly recommend this movie especially for those who have been subjected to prejudice.

Last week included Down Syndrome Observance Day.  I first became aware of it in the early morning news.  I have had the opportunity to be subjected to this for several years.  We have a cousin who has Down Syndrome.  Over the years he has brought much happiness and love to the Queen family. Yes, there have been challenges but through guidance and supervision he, and we, have overcome most of these.  Recently with my opportunity to become involved with Miss Amazing I have been able to observe Down Syndrome girls overcome barriers and make dreams come true.  Do not miss the opportunity to share the life of a Down syndrome individual and experience their love.

The Clarksburg Lions Club observed its 100 years of service to our community.  In keeping with this celebration, a banquet was held on Saturday, March 23 at the Best Western Plus in Bridgeport. Patty Flanagan, president, presided over the event.

Proclamations from the Harrison County Commission and the City of Clarksburg were presented to observe this event. One hundred years ago, the Lions Club was formed and serving as its first president was William Stathers.  Presenting a club history was Al Cox.

Current officers of the club are President Patty Flanagan, Vice President Betty Waddy, Secretary Brock Malcolm, and Treasurer Mickey Petitto. The club meets the second and fourth Fridays of each month at noon at the Brickside Bar & Grille.

Hopefully Spring is here, and I hope you have noticed all the white blossoms on the trees as you travel around the city. Many go to Washington, D.C. to see the cherry blossoms, but our white blossoms are just as beautiful.

Stay healthy, stay happy and until next week “Now You Have Heard It Through The Grapevine.”
