The Grapevine: A New Year's Tradition Unique to My Circle as 75 Attend January 1, 2023 Waffle Buffet

Over the last month, most of my articles have concentrated on customs and traditions, which many of us observe. They seem to make our observances of the holidays much happier.

The custom I am going to write about today, helps us celebrate New Year’s Day. When we speak of New Year’s we think of the parties on New Year’s Eve, or we might think of our menu centered around cabbage for our New Year’s Day dinner. Over the last several years you could always find me at the home of Mary L. “Weege” Vargo celebrating New Year’s. Every New Year’s Day for the last several years Weege has hosted a waffle buffet for her family and friends.

This came about at a family gift exchange some 12 years ago. It seemed that the popular gift of the season was a waffle iron. Three waffle irons were in the family gift exchange. After a little thought Weege volunteered to take the irons and host a waffle buffet on New Year’s Day.

On that first celebration about 35 people were in attendance and this year 75 were recorded in attendance. At that first gathering, Weege’s mother was still with her, and this was a great opportunity for her to interact with all those guests. Only once in the last 12 years has the buffet been canceled, and that was due to Covid.

The buffet features eggs, bacon, sausage and all those delicious toppings for the waffles, the most popular being bananas foster. Traditional breakfast drinks compliment the breakfast.

“I am so happy to be able to do this for all my friends who help me throughout the year in my many volunteer projects. This is my way of saying thank you and I hope to continue this event for many more years,” Weege said.

I cannot express in words how much I enjoy this event, not only for the good food, but for the opportunity to visit with friends that I see only once a year. Thanks, Weege.

Happy New Years to all my readers. A good resolution for 2023 is to stay healthy, happy, and kind. Take care and until next week “Now You Have Heard It Through The Grapevine”
