This past week I attended two very special events. I am still trying to get out and sometimes it becomes very hard, but the effort was worth it this week.

 

On Thursday evening the Friends of the Clarksburg-Harrison Public Library held its annual meeting at the Friedlanders Building.  There was a lovely dinner prepared and served by My Mothers Daughter. The Friends are a group of volunteers who promote and support the downtown Clarksburg library.  Membership is available to anyone interested in furthering public library services in our area. 

 

Victor Folio, president, conducted a short business meeting and Rebecca D’Annunzio, treasurer, gave a treasurer’s report.  I have very fond memories of the library, its staff, and the Friends as I spent a lot of time there with the late Merle Moore, Clarksburg librarian.  We all should be very proud of our library and the services it renders to our citizens.

 

The committee presented a live performance by Doris Fields as popular blues singer, Bessie Smith. This talented actress and singer certainly entertained the audience with the history and music of Bessie Smith.  The presentation was a “History Alive!” program of the West Virginia Humanities Council.

 

My next little outing found me at a ribbon cutting in Glen Elk.  It was the official grand opening of Elwood’s Pizzeria.  It is located on Fourth Street across from Tomaro’s Bakery.  Two young entrepreneurs, Aaron Gallo and Greg Harris, have made a dream come true with this business. It is named after a friend who recently passed away.  You know part of a good pizza is enjoying it in the Glen Elk atmosphere.

 

The establishment is open Tuesday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.  It offers all the traditional foods such as pizza, hoagies, calzones, and sandwiches.  But the mouthwatering winner is the pizza crust.  It is comparable to the best in our area.  Lunch specials are offered daily from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Inside dining is available.

 

It was such a pleasure to attend this event.  The atmosphere was so warm and the owners were so sociable. The best part was the food, but I enjoyed meeting old friends.

 

Just a reminder that zucchini season will be here very soon.  Be prepared with your favorite recipes.  Of course my favorite is Tiella.  I got into a discussion about it with Jeannie Hardesty and reminded her that the recipe is in my cookbook, Arrivederci. 

 

For some reason I am most anxious to try fried zucchini cakes.  I have found several recipes and will share them with you in future blogs.  Please do not forget when you get overwhelmed with zucchini you can shred it, squeeze the water out of it and freeze it in one cup measurements and use to make zucchini bread.
