The Grapevine: Amidst the Activities of the Holidays, a Look at New Program at Bridgeport Public Library

By Rosalyn Queen on December 02, 2021 from The Grapevine via Connect-Bridgeport.com

With Thanksgiving over, we are moving right along with the Holiday season.  If you look at the calendar, I am sure that there are many events that will fill in your days.  Most of or organizations will have holiday dinners, there are several parades and outdoor lighting events.  There are also many art and craft shows where you might be able to pick up a unique gift for that someone special.  Most of our churches will be having holiday observances with special services and many musical presentations.

So, then you might ask me why to print a column on what to do.  Well, we must remember that in three or four weeks the hustle and bustle will be over, it will be cold outside and there might even be snow that will keep us in.  This is why I want to fill you in on the new program that was announced at the Bridgeport Public Library.

I met with Angela Spatafore, a librarian at the library, several weeks ago and we discussed the creation of Hobby Kits.  Hobby Kits is a program to introduce new skills to individuals who frequent the library.  A prepared kit will contain the necessary tools and information to get the individual started on the project.  Individual kits have been prepared covering projects from wood carving, exercise to cooking.  Some kits will include suggested reading to help the individual go further with the chosen project if interested.

The exercise kit might offer ways that seniors can exercise while sitting at home. Using weights and stretch bands.  The cooking kit will offer a simple recipe and ingredients on preparing frittis for a simple winter’s night dinner.

For more information contact the Bridgeport Library.  This will give us the opportunity to try a new skill, activity, or project.  After all the holiday activities conclude, this will give us the opportunity to look forward to a new project.

Do not forget that the library still has a wealth of reading for us.  Lately I have been reading at least six books a week.  Most of my reading has been about people and how they dealt with the Jewish situation during the war.  It has certainly opened my eyes to an ugly time and the suffering that a generation of people endured.

Just a reminder that the PWA will be selling Pita Piata next week for $10.  Each Pita will be sold on a Fiesta dessert plate and ready for gift giving.  There is also a raffle for a Christmas wreath containing approximately $500 worth of gift cards that will be raffled at our Holiday dinner.  Chances are $1. Call 304-624-6881 for information.

The PWA Holiday dinner and 100th anniversary celebration will be held on. Sunday, December 12 at the Uptown Event Center.  We will also install our new officers.  The dinner is free, and the event is being sponsored by Davis Funeral Home, The family of Dianne Urchak and Laura Goff Davis.  Pandemic rules will be observed, and reservations must be made by calling 304 624 6881.

Stay healthy, be observant of the COVID virus and until next week “Now You Have Heard It Through The Grapevine.”
