The Grapevine: Birthdays and the Seeds of Italy

By Rosalyn Queen on February 11, 2016 from The Grapevine via Connect-Bridgeport.com

My grandson, Ben, celebrated his 21st birthday this past weekend and his dad and mother hosted a little dinner at Twin Oaks.  Well, it started out to be a little dinner. There were approximately 80 people there and I always enjoy getting the opportunity to interact with these young people.  Although there were still plenty of older friends that I also enjoy talking with.  It is hard to believe that Ben is 21.  But they do grow up and he is a fine young man.

My second event was to attend the 60th birthday party of my longtime friend Cheryl Cummings Mihaulic.  Her husband, John, planned a surprise party and it was held at Sunny Croft Country Club. Cheryl is such a good friend and she is also my Godchild.  I have known her for many years and I so enjoy her company.  Most of those attending were family, that being the Fain family, and there were several of her close friends.  This was the first time I had been at Sunny Croft for several years and I must commend the staff on the good food that they served.

As I have said many times, the older you get it does not take much to excite you and this week I received my 2016 Catalog of SEEDS OF ITALY.  I really like going through each page and reading about the seeds. They had several different kinds of Swiss Chard and I intend to order some of it. They also had pepper seeds.  Those are the ones that we really look for come fall, when we want to do some canning.  The packages run about $3.50 per pack for about 350 seeds. There is also a great selection of tomato seeds and they even have anise seed.  I know many of us are looking for anise now for our Easter bread but maybe we will be able to grow some for next year.  It is worth a try.   If you would like to get a catalog go on line to (http://growitalian.com) or call (785) 748 0959.

I have been enjoying watching sports while I am confined indoors.  I enjoyed the Super Bowl and really like to watch the girls and boys basketball teams from WVU.  I must admit I was cheering for the Broncos and especially for Peyton Manning.

I am not sure just what the Groundhog predicted but for me, Spring cannot come soon enough.  You will never know how much I miss sitting on my front porch. I am still taking chemo and will be for a while.  I just hope it is doing what it is supposed to be doing to make me well.

Do not forget that this is still soup weather and now is the time to use up those vegetables you put up from your gardens. Thanks again for those who continue to send cards, I enjoy every one.  Keep in touch and until next week "NOW YOU HAVE HEARD IT THROUGH THE GRAPEVINE".
