The Grapevine: Fall Means it's Time for Apple Butter; Progressive Women's Association Planning for Holidays

By Rosalyn Queen on September 30, 2021 from The Grapevine via Connect-Bridgeport.com

There is no arguing that Fall is here.

The turning of the leaves and the cool nights are proof.

I know that most of you have your gardens cleaned off.  here is just one more thing that we need to do to get ready for winter.  Apples are ready to be picked and preserved however you like best.

One of my favorite apple recipes is apple butter. Several years ago, I came upon this recipe and have used it every year since.  I take about six cups of peeled and sliced apples, place them in a crock pot, add two cups of sugar, and two tablespoons of cinnamon.  Turn the crock pot on high for one hour, then put it on low.

Let the apples cook overnight and for the best part of the next day. It may take longer for the apples to turn dark brown. Stir occasionally, tasting and add more sugar or cinnamon if your taste dictates.

Apple butter will turn very smooth and great for spreading. Store in plastic containers and place in freezer. Great on toast on cold winter mornings.

Another great recipe for winter to use up your apples is the apple cake. A very moist cake that is delicious served with whipped cream or ice cream.

The Progressive Women’s Association held their monthly meeting on Wednesday evening at the Uptown Event Center. The nominating Committee presented a slate of officers for the coming year.  At the next meeting nominations will be taken from the floor prior to voting.  Write in nominations will also be accepted. To be able to vote, dues must be paid.

There will be three fundraisers for the holidays. Chances are being sold for a full size black, red and white quilt. A Christmas wreath with approximately $500 worth of gift cards will be raffled.  The ladies will also be making pita piato the week after Thanksgiving.  Orders can be placed by calling 624 6881.

It was agreed upon that meetings for the winter months would alternate between noon and 5:30 p.m.

Lunch will be served free at the noon meetings.

If the pandemic allows a special Christmas dinner will be held for the installation of officers. The raffles will be held at this meeting.  The observation of the 100th anniversary is temporarily on hold but tentative plans are to include it in the Christmas dinner.

If planning a special event remember to rent the Uptown Event Center. A new commercial kitchen has been installed and is available to the public.

Take care, stay healthy and until next week “Now You Have Heard It Through The Grapevine.”
