The Grapevine: Family Election Ties, Mushrooms and Some Talk on Issues that Involve Veterans Day

By Rosalyn Queen on November 10, 2022 from The Grapevine via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Even though the month of November kind of marks the end of Fall and the beginning of winter, there are a lot of things going on.

First it marks the end of the election and all the hard work that the office seekers put into the campaigns.  I want to thank all of those who were seeking office.  Personally, I know it is not an easy task.  Congratulations to those who won and now it is time to do the job you have been seeking.

I am very proud of my grandson, Ben Queen.  I love him and know he will do a good job in his new office. Three generations of Queens went to the polls early to vote.  Fray and I, Mike Queen, and Ben Queen.  I guess Queen and elections are synonymous, but it kind of runs through our blood.

Next, I prepared myself for the hard job of preparing mushrooms for our winter feasts.  Thanks to the generosity of Mary and John Barnett, I did get mushrooms.  You know this type of mushroom is the only one that I know anything about.  It has several names but is best known for its shape.  It kind of reminds you of a head of cauliflower.  It is very tedious to clean as it may have bugs in it and that is a good thing.  A mushroom without bugs may mean it is poisonous.  I always look for a bug.

Once I cleaned my mushrooms, I took the first batch and canned them with peppers and sauce.  The second batch, I put in the crock pot with peppers and mint and garlic and salt.  It will take these several weeks to be ready to eat.  Always my treat for Christmas Eve.

The third batch, I prepared by parboiling and then placing them in an egg and flour mixture and frying them.  Great hor d'oeuvres.  I have to confess that this year it seemed harder to get them done and maybe this will be the last, but we will enjoy them this year.

November means we are getting ready for Thanksgiving. Marty and I hope we will have dinner here but will go wherever the food is. There are no surprises for our dinner, we just prepare the traditional menu.  We are all getting excited as we await the birth of our new baby, it may be a Christmas present.

A big thank you to all who attended the brunch shower for Holli and Ryan and thank you to Lisa and Andy Lang for hosting it.

I hope you marked your calendar to attend the book signing of Colonel Taylor and his Civil War History of Harrison County. A reception will be held on Sunday, November 13 at 3 p.m. at the Uptown Event Center.  Laura Goff Davis is chairing this event.  The public is invited.  All proceeds from the sale of this book will be donated to the Harrison County Historical Society.

I also want to make mention of Veterans Day.  Please take the time to observe this holiday.  Think about all the sacrifices our men have made to keep us safe.  Talk to your children about it so they will know what the holiday is about.  It is said the war ended on the eleventh month and the eleventh day, hence November 11.  A thank you to all who continue to serve to keep us free.

Take care, stay safe and until next week “Now You Have Heard It Through The Grapevine.”
