The Grapevine: Family, Readers, and National Fruit and Veggie Month

By Rosalyn Queen on June 23, 2015 from The Grapevine via Connect-Bridgeport.com

This past week we had cause for another celebration. It was West Virginia Day. I hope you observed it or if nothing else that you read some history about our wonderful state.  It would have been a great time to have taken a drive and looked at some of our beautiful state. You know it really is "Almost Heaven."

I am so proud to announce that my great niece, Jenna Haymond Robey was sworn in this week as a practicing attorney in West Virginia. She took her oath in a formal ceremony at the Federal Courthouse. She is currently working in the law office of Robert Greer in Bridgeport.  Needless to say, we are very proud of Jenna on this accomplishment.

Some new information that was forwarded to me by my godson, Josh Maxwell, might interest some of my readers.  There is going to be a pepperoni roll contest.  As I understand it, not an eating one but a baking one or the bragging rights of the best pepperoni roll. If any of you are interested in joining please call Diana Pishner Walker in Fairmont.

We were doing some shopping in WalMart this past week and I ran into a lady who gave me a great hug and said, "You are Rosalyn Alonso, the Grapevine Lady, aren't you?"  I, of course, answered "yes" and she proceeded to tell me how much and how long she had been reading the column. I knew she was telling the truth for she commented about the swans and about my son. She identified herself as Mrs. Douglas from Bridgeport. I have never addressed this much in my column but I have had many, many inquires about the column not being in the local paper. I cannot give you a reason, as there was never a reason given to me. This is kind of like preaching to the choir. Those of you reading this have found other ways to enjoy the column. Please share this info with any of your friends or neighbors who cannot get the column. Once again I apologize and I thank all of you for your continued support in reading the column and in getting in touch with me. I love to hear from you and meet you just as I did with Mrs. Douglas.

June is National Fresh Fruit and Vegetables Month.  We have really been enjoying the fresh fruit that we get from the local supermarkets. My friend, Frank Fernandez, has told me that it appears this is going to be a good year for fruit. I hope I will be able to make plenty of jelly as we are running out. I make frequent stops at the Produce House and Roseanne has wonderful vegetables. You can really fry up a pan of peppers or as I did today a skillet of steamed cabbage with ham, carrots and potatoes. We can make ourselves healthy by preparing these types of meals.

Soon the Fourth of July holiday will be here. Be sure to make plans to attend one of the fantastic fireworks shows being planned. WDTV hosts one show and the City of Clarksburg will host another at Norwood Park. I know that many of you are preparing a trip to the beach.  Please be careful and be safe.

Take care and until next week, "Now You Have Heard It Through The Grapevine."
