The Grapevine: In like a Lion and Out like a Lamb

By Rosalyn Queen on March 03, 2015 from The Grapevine via Connect-Bridgeport.com

In Like a Lion out like a Lamb???  March is here and lets hope when Spring come in on the 21st we will be done with cold and snow. Once again, the months seem to be flying by, I do not know what happened to February. I did get to celebrate my daughters birthday and my son in law, Andy's birthday along with JoEllen Crowley's big day. I guess the old adage "time waits for no man" is true.  So if you did not get it done in February do not waste March thinking about it just plan to do it this month.

If you missed the Black History Luncheon sponsored by the PWA of Harrison  County, you really missed a great event.  First of all the lunch was delicious and we thank Liz Welch for helping us prepare it.PWA member, Maxine Seese prepared all the deserts served those in attendance. I would bet there was no better program presented anywhere to observe this event.  The PWA had sponsored this event for many years. It is part of our mission to honor The Black community and to introduce to all our citizens an opportunity to learn about their culture. Throughout the year we sponsor different events to highlight different cultures in our area. Our program started with a musical presentation by entertainer Tony Starkey.  He is a great young man who is new in this area to entertaining.  He ended his presentation with his rendition of "Amazing Grace." After this most moving start we heard from Professor John O'Connor who read Harlem Renaissance Poetry.  He is a professor of Theatre at Fairmont State University. His selection and presentation was excellent.

The PWA also honored the Late Ophelia Davis the late Tuskegee  Airman Thomas Mayfield by donating a copy of the West Virginia Encyclopedia to be placed in a Library of the families choice.

Ron Watson, president of the Harrison County Commission presented a "Proclamation" to James Griffin, president of the Black Heritage Festival.  Our Keynote Speaker was Marjorie Fuller who is the Director of the Black Culture Center at West Virginia University. The audience was spellbound as she delivered her remarks about the importance our elders play in our lives, no  matter what culture or heritage. She was accompanied by her daughter who is a student at Towson University.

In our own quite way, the PWA continues to serve the people of Harrison County while fulfilling our mission.

I spoke about Spring earlier and I want to advise you that the PWA is having a Vera Bradley Purse Bingo on Sunday, March 15 at the VFW on Pike Street in Clarksburg.  The doors open at noon and Bingo starts at 2:00.  Refreshments will be available. Tickets are available from members or by calling 304 624 6881.  Now you will be eligible to win a beautiful Vera Bradley purse, just what you  need to spark up your spring wardrobe.  Each purse will be filled with wonderful gifts.  This one of the projects of the PWA in their "SAVE OUR BUILDING" project. Please support us in the endeavor. Just a reminder that we operate a Food Bank as one of our community projects and we offer our building to many community organizations. If you are planning an event and are looking for a venue please stop by the Uptown Event Center and book it for your party.

Take care, put a smile on your face and remember Spring is just a few weeks away. Keep in touch and until next week "Now You Have Heard It Through The Grapevine."
