The Grapevine: Inheriting Political Leadership and Anticipating the Olympics

By Rosalyn Queen on April 19, 2016 from The Grapevine via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Many times we hear the phrase "the apple does not fall far from the tree."

Well, I think this phrase can be applied to those seeking a political office.  Just as Rachel Romano followed in her father's footsteps to be an attorney; just as Matt Kalaygio followed in his father's steps to be a doctor; just as Mark Oliverio and Deanna Mason Oliverio followed in their father's steps to run a pepper factory; and just as all the Oliverio children followed in their parent's footsteps to run a restaurant, so do we find those young individuals who are seeking office this year inspired by their parents.

If you drive by any vacant lot or curb side you will see many campaign signs.  Most of these signs bring back many memories for me when I was very active out on the campaign trail. I see J. B. McCuskey who is following his father, John McCuskey's path to serving the public.  John McCuskey served Harrison County as a member of the House of Delegates.  Before that, John's mother (J.B.'s grandmother) Christine McCuskey served on the Harrison County Board of Education.

And many others.

I congratulate all of the individuals who are running and wish them well.  We certainly need to hand the reigns over to these young people.  One thing I know for sure is that these family members know what it takes to seek an office and knows the strain, both physically and financially it puts on a family.  It takes a special breed of person to get out there and campaign. I personally want to thank all those running for an office and I want to thank their families, too.  I urge each of you to take a moment to get to know them and most of all to be sure you are registered and that you vote.

I must admit that I am not into baseball and I miss watching all the football and basketball games.  But I am eagerly awaiting the Olympics and hope by that time I will not miss staying indoors instead of sitting on my porch.  This is a reminder that each of us should try to get a little physical activity into our daily schedules.  I am trying to blame my inactivity on the chemo but I think that I have become a little lazy and the old bones just do not want to work like they once did. Of course, age could be a contributing factor also.

Now is the time to get started on the garden.  Dave got ours tilled and we have made a promise not to  plant until after that May 15 date.  This is one time that I have to admit that he is right.  Our friend Frank Fernandez brought over a mess of ramps that he got from his farm.  I am sorry but I cannot get past the smell to eat them, this is one Spring tonic that I will do without.

Happy birthday to all of you April babies, especially to Virgil Smith and Rose Guzzi.  My sincere condolences to Laura Fullen on the loss of her husband Floyd who was also an elected official for many years.  I have many memories of socializing with the Fullens, especially on the campaign trail.  What two wonderful people.

Remember those April showers bring May flowers; enjoy this beautiful weather and until next week "Now You Have Heard It through the Grapevine."
