The Grapevine: Last Minute Summer Memories and Millennials

By Rosalyn Queen on August 04, 2016 from The Grapevine via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Happy August! Summer is almost over but I am sure there are several more hot days left and just a few days until school starts.

If you have not had your vacation yet with the children, now is the time to get it in. If there is not time to plan a vacation away from home, plan on doing some daytime things that will make memories.  You might plan a picnic in the park or an all-day shopping spree at the Mall with lunch.  A nice ride through the woods with a nice slow walk would also be nice.

Some evening, go have an ice cream sundae party at your home with all the fixings and let everyone prepare their own sundae.  Be creative but plan on making a few memories before summer is over.

Now that I can pull away from the television since the conventions are over, I thought I might discuss a word with you.  For those of you who are smarter than me you might already know these facts, but I did not and thought it was worth the time to do a little research.

Millennial is the new word that I heard often and have even heard it on other programs.  It refers to people born from 1980 and 2000.  Where did this word come from?  Neil Howe and William Strauss coined the word in 1991.

They said a predictable cycle demonstrated that Millennial's have generational personalities in opposition to their immediate predecessors but share significant traits. The thought is that this group share traits with the generation born from around 1900 to 1920. They made a prediction in what they saw as the Millennial kids were raised.  Huge changes were being seen in this group as they grew older.  Their prediction was that families would be closer and this group would be more risk averse.  To date they say that this has turned out to be correct.

If you are interested in finding out more about this group go to the Webster dictionary or you can findjeff@alot of information on line. I am sure glad to find out that my grandchildren are Millennial and this is not a bad word.

MARY, HARRY, TERRY AND PERRY, How does your garden grow?  Ours seems to be doing well, especially now that we have had some rain.  I am really enjoying the fruits of Dave's labor.  The Swiss chard is not ready yet, but I am very optimistic that it will be.  The kale is fantastic. If you have extra be sure to share it with your family and neighbors.

Take care, be safe, keep cool and until next week "Now You Have Heard It through the Grapevine."
