The Grapevine: Mushrooms, Women of Distinction, the Blessed Mother, and Voting

By Rosalyn Queen on October 20, 2016 from The Grapevine via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Yes, we can finally say that the mushrooms are up.  They seem to be in abundance this year and now is the time to get them.  We got several this weekend and they were so easy to clean because they must have just come up.  With the rain we have had and the hot days they will be popping up everywhere.

There are several ways to fix them and all the recipes are listed in my cookbook Arrivederci.  The cookbook is available at James and Law and at Tomaro's Bakery or you can call me at 304-842-2662.

It is very painstaking to clean them but when you are done you know it has been well worth it. Thanksgiving just wouldn't be the same without the mushrooms down in the crock. This would be a beautiful time to get out in the woods for a walk and you just might happen onto a nice mushroom. Happy Hunting.

I have covered the Women of Distinction program several times in the column but I just wanted to make one more comment.  It was a wonderful luncheon presented to a sold-out crowd.  The women honored, ranged in age from 25 to 85 and they all had different lifestyles.  This diverse group has added a lot to the community.

But the one thing that rang true to all of them was their commitment to give back and to share their talents with our citizens. We cannot say that any one of them was an all-round person in every field, but we could say that together they have made a difference in our community.  This is the reason the Progressive Women’s Association feels the need to have this program and to shine the spotlight on the different talents of local women.  Congratulations, again to all of them.

Our next program will be in February in conjunction with Black Culture Month.  The public may make a nomination by contacting the director at 304 624 6881.

I want to remind all of you that attended the luncheon and received my little gift of the "M" to make sure that you schedule your mammogram. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  Wear the "M" every day so that others will be reminded of the importance of this test.

My visitor, the statue of the Blessed Mother, has left my house after a nine day visit.  I can never express just exactly what it meant to have her here.  When the ladies came to take her to the next home, I was so sad to see her leave. I am going to try to get my own statue and give it a permanent home with me.  If any of you are interested in having her visit your home contact the Immaculate Conception Church office for more information.

Election time is here and I urge all of you to please get out and vote.  Our County Clerk has made it easy to get out and vote with early voting beginning next week.  I know that most of you are probably like me and will be glad when it is all over but we must participate in the process. We have many good local candidates who want to serve us so be sure to find out just what their platform is and support them if you can.

Enjoy this beautiful season, keep in touch with me and until next week "Now You Have Heard It through the Grapevine."
