The Grapevine: Plans for Events Statewide to Land in Harrison County at Progressive Women's Association

Secretary of State Mac Warner has announced that his office will be spearheading the organization of a statewide event “WV Centennial Celebration of the 19th Amendment.”  Civic, political and government leaders from throughout the state have been organized to hold events throughout the year.  Also included in the celebration will be the 200th birthday of Susan B. Anthony.  Her actions and organizational work led to the passage of the 13th Amendment abolishing slavery and the 19th Amendment granting women the right to vote
 
Susan B. Anthony who said “Organize, agitate and educate must be our war cry,” in her efforts to organize an anti slavery convention and initiate the American Equal Rights Association.  She was also a part of theUnderground Railroad.  She started campaigning for the abolishment of slavery at the age of 16.  She was the first woman to appear on a U. S. Coin when in 1979 a one dollar coin was struck with her likeness on it at the Philadelphia mint.   Each of the ten honorees will receive a coin as a souvenir of this celebration.  Immediately following the program birthday cake will be served to those present.
 
The Progressive Women's Association of Harrison County will present-a special birthday celebration  for Susan B Anthony's 200 birthday during our annual  Women of Distinction Luncheon honoring women of African American heritage to celebrate Black Culture Month.The luncheon will be held on  Friday, February 13, at noon at the Uptown Event Center on Washington Avenue in Clarksburg.  The event is open to the public and reservations can be made by calling 304+624-6881.The PWA has secured Marjorie Fuller from WVU to be the Keynote Speaker.
 
Harrison County Clerk Susan Thomas has been invited to update those present on voter registration.  
 
The Women of Distinction program is held annually to honor women in our community who volunteer in various projects to help our community.   Their varied contributions make a difference to our residents and to Harrison County. Celebrations are also held in October to observe Italian Culture month and in June to Celebrate America.
