The Grapevine: Remembering Frank Gabor and Patiently Waiting for the Beginning of Summer

By Rosalyn Queen on May 19, 2016 from The Grapevine via Connect-Bridgeport.com

This week I received the news of the untimely death of Frank Gabor.  As most of you know, Frank was married to our dear friend and former Harrison County resident, Jane White Gabor.  Both of them were graduates of Fairmont State University and resided in Maryland with their family and where they conducted their business. They also maintained a place back in West Virginia where they came home frequently to visit.

Recently Frank and Jane donated heavily to the restoration and renovation of a building at Fairmont State University to be used as the Cultural Center.  They were both honored by the West Virginia Italian Heritage Festival several years ago. They attended the Festival every year and could be found working at the Blue Bird Store booth with Jane's high school friend Ann Lewis Leasburg.

They traveled to Italy last year with a group from Fairmont State and was actively involved in the activities at the college.

The Frank and Jane Gabor Folk Life Center will stand as a tribute to Frank Gabor, but he will be sadly missed among his family, friends and associates. Jane was my lifelong friend and fellow student from Roosevelt Wilson High School. I extend my sympathy to Jane and her family.

Sympathy also to the Petrigac, Lattea and Stumpo families on their recent losses.

If we blink our eye we may miss the official coming of summer with the Memorial Day holiday.  Most people look at this as the beginning of summer. How can it possibly be summer with the snowflakes and low temperatures this past week? Well I am sure of one thing and that is that I am not going to get out my bathing suit and you will surely not find me at the pool on opening day. I have been patiently waiting for summer so that I can get out on my porch and I am sure that it will come just as all things come to those who wait.

A little note about planting, I guess the May 15 planting date is  not so good for this year, but we have waited this long so what is a few more days. One sure sign of summer is the Strawberry Festival and I hope that most of you are able to visit Buckhannon this week.

Mark your calendar for the Progressive Women's Association's Women of Distinction luncheon. It will be held on June 10 at noon at the Uptown Event Center.  Ten wonderful and caring women, in the areas of religion, medicine, arts, author, business, cultural, dance, organization and education will be inducted and the keynote speaker will be Dr. Carroll Morrison. A wonderful meal is being planned as we observe Celebrate America..  Reservations and tickets can be purchased by calling (304) 624-6881. I urge you to call as soon as possible as the last two luncheons were sell outs.

Do not forget to save your spring cleanup items for the PWA Rummage Sale.  We will be glad to store them in our new building until the rummage sale date. Just drop them off at the Uptown Event Center.

GET READY: Summer is on its way and until next week "Now You Have Heard It through the Grapevine."
