The Grapevine: Sharing Books with Granddaughter, Attending Past Inaugurations, and Joining the PWA

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on January 28, 2021 from The Grapevine via Connect-Bridgeport.com

While my granddaughter, Miranda, has been here at home doing her work, instead of in Washington, D.C., we have discovered that one thing that we have in common is reading. We have shared many books over the last several months and although we do not always like the same books, they still provide us with a lot to discuss.

One of the last books we enjoyed was The Book Of Lost Names.  It was a story about how the Germans treated the Jews during the war.  The book tells a story about an underground network of people who work to save the Jewish children and the title refers to a record kept by one of the workers about the children.  Although it was a sad story, it painted a vivid picture of the horrible incidents that occurred then.

Now I am reading The Truth According To Us by Annie Barrows.  This story takes place in Macedonia, West Virginia. I have just finished the first chapter and it seems that I am going to enjoy the story.  I will advise you when I have completed reading it.  Reading is a good way to pass the time during this pandemic.  Once again, I commend the staff at Bridgeport Library for being so helpful.

I will be getting my second vaccination this week.  I hope I do not have any of the same repercussions as with the first, but I feel it will be worth it if it keeps me from contacting the virus. Locally we have certainly had our share of the virus and I am so sad about the number of deaths we have had.  My sympathy to all those families who have had to deal with COVID.

This past week I spent most of my time watching the inauguration.  You all know I am very political and although I did not agree with some things that happened, I pray that our country will straighten out and that we can all work together for the good of our citizens.

The Inauguration seemed so strange this year.  I have attended several of them in Washington and it certainly was a different format than what we witnessed this year.  My good friend, the late Senator Robert C. Byrd got me tickets to the Clinton and Obama Inaugurations.  My aunt Ruby Keister, Judy Davis, Tonya Zednic, and Josh Maxwell accompanied me to the Clinton affair and my sister-in-law, Kay Burnett, and Cathy and Dan Fisher were along for Obama’s. I feel very proud to have been present for these two events.

This past week the Progressive Women's Association held their monthly meeting.  Although it is almost impossible to function under the current restrictions, we are moving ahead with a few projects.  We are hoping to have an Easter Bread bake sale so watch for future instructions on placing your orders. We are also in the process of a membership drive.  We have set our goal at 25 new members by June 1.  If you are a former member, please rejoin. We welcome any new members and we also invite gentlemen to join our group. Call 304-624-6881 for information.

Dues are $25 per year.

Stay healthy and keep your mask on.  Until next week “Now You Have Heard It Through The Grapevine.”
